How am I succeeding

These are the key points how I succeed.

* Patients - always be patient and don't rush to get it all at once and be patient with your clients. They can be a pain in the ass but that's what clients are for. Plus don't forget without them your stuffed.

* Great customer service is the key. Watch how you communicate. Don't lie to them but don't bum suck them either. Be yourself and take note of their requirements.

* LISTEN to your client and understand THEIR needs. You are developing a service for them and not YOU. Some sites I have developed I personally don't like but this is what THEY want. I see so many developers get carried away (especially with flash).

* Training - undergo all types of training from business to web development to customer service. You need all 3 to build a small business or you are stuffed. With 5 years of study I still have a lot more to go. I'm studding .Net now.

* Budget - stick to a planned budget. I have taught myself that a strict budget makes you work harder. Marketing helps so budget for some marketing but word of mouth is better as it's free.

* Be prepared to work at any hour of the day to at least to respond to emails.

* Be ethical at all times

* Keep motivated. It can be hard at times

* Be professional at all time.

* Don't use open source scripts. I think its cheating for a professional site. Amateurs do this

* Keep your work legal. Don't use pirated software, copied or re-engineer the scripts. Buy all licenses and do or your own work (or sub it out). Once you kill your reputation you're stuffed. Register your business, taxes etc etc etc. (every software I use is a commercial license. It took me 3 years to buy all the professional software than the updates are a headache too but at least I am protected legally). There are alternate software rather than the expensive ones. Great example is Macromedia Flash and SwishMax. It's a massive price difference with very similar features. (I actually own both of them)

* Ask questions to your vendor about what they can offer and ask your clients for their requirements. Never be afraid to ask.

* Don't say anything and not commit. I hate vendors who do this. At least ask for time to do your research if you are unsure.

* Don't be afraid to try new ideas. It's the new ideas that may break you away from others.

* Helps to have a supportive partner like my wife.

* Develop your contacts and join groups of your interests.

* Do your research on every vendor or sub before committing. This is a lesson I have learnt.

* When communicating with your contractors or vendor. Treat them with respect but be directive. Provide as much communication as required and not brief statements such as "my emails aren't working what should I do". You will often get better results.

Show any disrespect and they will loose interests with supporting you and may brush you aside for until they are in the mood. This is reality. Remember too they do NOT have a crystal ball and they are human.

Pay them within billing period. Helps build your relationship with them. If you have a problem with payments discuss with them in the billing period and not outside of it. Any discussion outside of the period is telling the vendor you're stalling payments.

ALWAYS THANK THEM when the job is completed. This will acknowledge the job is completed and that you are satisfied.

If they like you they will go that extra mile for you and it may be useful for when you need it most. This is human nature.

If you are unsatisfied tell them professionally. You may be surprised how communication may help you rather than having a fit and trying to play a power trip with them.

If you than cant get the results move on.
